The 35th Anniversary of the Salers Breed in Canada

CARSTAIRS, Alberta - This year marks the 35th anniversary of the Salers breed in Canada with the Alberta Salers Association. Celebratory events were held November 6th and 7th at Farmfair International 2008 in Edmonton.

This prestigious event attracted present and past Salers breeders, supporters and friends from across Canada.

Salers cattle were originally imported into Canada in 1973 from south central France with Vailiant, Imperial and Ivanohe the first bulls to reach Canadian pastures. The Salers Association of Canada was formed later that year. “The Alberta Salers Association and dedicated volunteers, with the financial assistance of an Alberta Ag Initiative Grant and industry sponsors have teamed up to make this celebration one which will be remembered for years to come,” explained Kathy Adams the secretary/manager of the Alberta Salers Association and the Salers Association of Canada.

On November 6th the Jackpot Pair of Purebred Salers Bull Calves show kicked-off the two-day celebration. Immediately following the show was the Cattlemen’s Classic and the Sale Cattle Parade. At 2 p.m. the “Cream of the Crop” sale was underway with outstanding consignments from breeders across the provinces. The following day was highlighted with the National and Big Bull shows.

The 35th anniversary banquet was held on November 7th, paying tribute to three pioneer breeders who remain active in the breed today. Commemorative belt buckles and golf shirts are also available to mark the
